Kotikielen Seura and Virittäjä > In English > Contents Virittäjä is a linguistic quarterly published by Kotikielen Seura (The Society for the Study of Finnish). The articles have summaries in English or in some other major language. Starting from 1995, the summaries are also in the Web. Virittäjä has appeared continuously since 1897. To celebrate the 100th anniversary, the TOC's of all volumes of Virittäjä are now published in the Web and also in printed form. The printed version (years 1883, 1886, and 1897–1996) can be ordered via e-mail from virittaja-tilaukset@kotikielenseura.fi. 1897–2009: 1897–2002: The TOC's in alphabetical order (by the name of the author) A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O/Õ P Q R S T U V/W X, Y/Ü, Z Å, Ä, Ö More comments on the principles applied when editing these pages, acknowledgments etc. (in Finnish). Word indices The indices published in Virittäjä, Finland's most important linguistic quarterly since 1896, traditionally include lists of those words that appear in Virittäjä, either etymologically examined or otherwise mentioned. When the complete TOC's of Virittäjä were published at the time of Virittäjä's 100th anniversary, Jarmo Alatalo also prepared a compilation of previous word indices which was, however, too large to be published on paper. This WWW version of the complete word indices follows the principles of the previous indices in most respects; the classification of languages (which, in some cases, is inconsistent and suffers from the vacillation between different taxonomic views) has been slightly simplified. Part of the material appears in PDF format, readable using the freeware Acrobat Reader by Adobe. The WWW indices are under construction; so far, there are indices for the following languages: Finnish, Karelian, Ludian, Vepsian, Ingrian, Estonian, Votian, Livonian, Sámi. Finnish = suomi (html) A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P R S T U V/W X, Y, Z Ä Ö Karelian = karjala (PDF) The index of Karelian words includes words from different dialects, which means that etymologically identical words may appear in different places (e.g. p may correspond to b in other dialects, eä to iä). The Olonets Karelian (Fi. aunus, Ru. livvikovskij jazyk) words, listed as a separate group in some previously published indices, are listed here among other Karelian words as well. all Karelian words (163 KB) A B, D E, F, G H I J K L M N O P R S T U V Y, Z, Ä, Ö Ludian = lyydi (PDF) Ludian is sometimes considered a dialect of Karelian, and some Ludian words may appear in the Karelian index. all Ludian words (65 KB) A–D E–H I, J K L, M N–P R, S T, U, V Y, Z, Ä, Ö Vepsian = vepsä (PDF) all Vepsian words (98 KB) A, B D, E, F, G H I, J K L M N, O P R S, Sh T Tsh, U V Y, Z, Ä, Ö Ingrian = inkeroinen (pdf) Some Ingrian words may be listed in the Finnish index. all Ingrian words (65 KB) A–H I, J K L, M N–P R, S T–V Y–Ö Estonian = viro (html) Dialect words appear in rough transcription. The words are in Estonian alphabetical order (see below). E = South Estonian (not marked consistently). A B, C, D E F, G H I J K L M N O P R S Z T U V/W Õ Ä Ö Ü Votian = vatja (PDF) all Votian words (130 KB) A B, D, E F, G, H I, J K L M N O P R S Sh T Tsh U V Ü, Z, Õ, Ä, Ö Livonian = liivi (PDF) all Livonian words (65 KB) A, B, D E/Õ, G, I J K, L M, N, O P, R S T, U V, Ü, Z, Ä, Ö Sámi = saame (PDF) The Sámi indices still need to be checked; there may be mistakes or inconsistencies especially in their written form, reflecting many different orthographies or traditions.
